Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for US Citizens to Study Abroad Through the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program, undergraduate students from the United States who have low financial resources are given the opportunity to study or intern overseas, thereby gaining skills that are vital to the economic and national security of the United States. They will develop skills that are essential to their academic and professional development, such as fluency in a variety of languages and an understanding of different cultures. Students will be encouraged to pursue education and/or internship opportunities in a wide variety of nations, locales, and world regions thanks to this program. Students are also encouraged to study foreign languages, particularly critical need languages (also known as languages that are considered crucial to the nation’s security).

Scholarship value/inclusions:

The scholarship amounts range from one hundred dollars to five thousand dollars, and there is also the possibility of receiving an award for critical language needs of up to eight thousand dollars. The scholars are chosen through a competitive screening procedure, and they are required to utilize the grant money to cover qualifying costs associated with studying or interning overseas. The tuition, accommodation and board, books, local transportation, insurance, overseas airfare, and fees for passports and visas are all included in these charges. The ultimate grant amount for a Gilman Scholar will be based on the applicant’s level of financial need, the length of their program, the total cost of their program, and the quality of their application.

Eligibility:

The recipients of the Gilman Scholarship are only eligible to win the award once. Even if a student has already applied for and been denied the Gilman Scholarship in the past, they are encouraged to submit a new application as long as they continue to satisfy all of the qualifying standards listed below:

  •  a resident or citizen of the United States of America;
  •  Be enrolled as an undergraduate student in good academic standing at an approved higher education institution in the United States (this includes both institutions of two years and institutions of four years);
  •  Be eligible for and receiving a Federal Pell Grant at the time of application, or provide confirmation that they will be eligible for and receiving a Pell Grant during the period that they are participating in a study abroad program or internship;
    presently participating in the application process for, or having already been accepted into, a credit-bearing internship or study abroad program. Before an award can be distributed, you will need to provide evidence that you have been accepted into the program;
  • Using the Travel Advisory System of the United States Department of State to apply for credit-bearing study abroad programs in a country or region that has an overall Travel Advisory Level of 1 or 2 for the entire country or region. However, certain locations within these nations or regions may be labeled as “Do not travel to” (Level 4) or “Reconsider travel to” (Level 3) sites under the Travel Advisory. As a result, students will not be permitted to go to these particular locations. In addition, students are not permitted to submit applications for programs that are located in nations or regions that have an overall Travel Advisory Level of 3 or 4.
  • If at any time throughout the application process, the selection process, or while on program, the United States Department of State determines that it is necessary, it reserves the right to request that certain countries or places have their programs altered. The final rewards are determined based on the amount of money that is available as well as the current state of health and safety in a country or location. In addition, the status of a Gilman Scholar could be affected if there was a change in the health or security situation in the country or place where they were studying.

The application for the October 2023 Deadline will become available in the middle of August 2023. This deadline applies to applicants whose in-person programs or internships begin between December 1, 2023 and October 31, 2024. This cycle includes the programs for the winter or January term of 2024, the spring of 2024, the maymester of 2024, the summer of 2024, the fall of 2024, and the academic year 2024-2025. Thursday, October 5, 2023 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time is the deadline for submission of applications.

This deadline applies to applicants whose in-person programs or internships begin between May 1, 2024 and April 30, 2025. This cycle includes the Maymester 2024 program, the Summer 2024 program, the Fall 2024 program, the Academic Year 2024-2025 program, and the Spring 2025 internship. Thursday, March 7, 2024 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific Time is the deadline for submission of applications.
