Brief description:
Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) were established with the goals of establishing Canada as a global centre of excellence in research and higher education as well as attracting and retaining PhD candidates of world-class calibre. These fellowships can be applied towards the pursuit of a doctoral degree (or a combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD), if appropriate.
Host Institution(s):
Universities in Canada receiving funding from the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship. There are no exemptions to the rule that the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship can only be held at the qualifying Canadian institution that put in the nomination.
Level/Field(s) of study:
PhD programmes (or combined MA/PhD or MD/PhD degrees) in the fields of social sciences and/or humanities, natural sciences and/or engineering research, and health research.
A significant research component that leads to the completion of a thesis, major research project, dissertation, scholarly publication, performance, recital, and/or exhibit that is merit- or expert-reviewed at the institutional level is a requirement for completing an eligible doctoral programme. This requirement must be met in order for the programme to be considered eligible.
Eligible programmes include clinically-oriented programmes of study, such as clinical psychology, as well as joint graduate research programmes with a professional degree (for example, MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD), as long as these programmes have a strong autonomous research component, as was mentioned in the previous section of this article.
Number of Scholarships:
Each year, a total of 166 scholarships may be awarded.
Target group:
It is possible to submit a nomination for a Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship for citizens of Canada, permanent residents of Canada, and citizens of other countries.
Scholarship value/duration:
The scholarships are each worth a total of $175,000 over the course of three years.
Eligibility:
You need to meet the following requirements in order to be eligible for a Vanier CGS:
• You can only be nominated by one Canadian institution, and that institution needs to have obtained a quota for the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship;
• You must be in the process of earning your first doctoral degree (this includes joint undergraduate and graduate research programmes such as MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, and JD/PhD – if they have a documented and significant research component). It is important to keep in mind that only the PhD component of a combined degree can qualify for financing;
• Have the intention of beginning full-time doctoral (or a dual graduate programme such as: MD/PhD, DVM/PhD, JD/PhD) studies and research at the nominated institution during the summer semester or the academic year after the release of results; It is important to keep in mind that only the PhD component of a combined degree can qualify for financing;
• At the beginning of May 2024, you must not have more than 20 months of doctoral-level education under your belt.
• By May 1, 2024, have finished their doctoral programme with no more than 32 months of full-time study if the following conditions are met:
enrolled in a dual graduate research programme, such as an MD/PhD programme, MA/PhD programme, or DVM/PhD programme, for example. Applicants who fall into this category have access to the 32-month window regardless of whether or not they have previously been enrolled in a Master’s programme; or have accelerated directly from a Bachelor’s to a PhD (no time spent in a Master’s programme); or have accelerated directly from a Master’s degree into a Doctoral programme without first obtaining the Master’s degree.
You have completed the equivalent of at least two years of full-time study and earned a grade point average of at least 4.0 in each of those years, as assessed by your educational institution. Candidates are strongly advised to get in touch with the academic organisation in order to learn what the institution considers to be an A-average;
• In order to start or finish a doctorate programme, the applicant cannot currently possess or have previously held a scholarship or fellowship at the doctoral level from CIHR, NSERC, or SSHRC.

Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships (Vanier CGS) Candidates have to have themselves recommended by a Canadian institution that has a quota if they wish to be considered for this scholarship. Candidates are not permitted to submit direct applications to the Vanier CGS programme.
The application process can be started in one of two different ways. Either the student notifies the faculty of graduate studies at the chosen institution of their intention to apply to the Vanier CGS programme OR the institution commences the nomination procedure by contacting the preferred candidate. The student notifies the faculty of graduate studies at the chosen institution of their purpose to apply to the Vanier CGS programme.
The student is responsible for preparing the application and submitting it to the nominating institution using the ResearchNet application system by the deadline established by the institution. After that, the institution that made the recommendations is responsible for sending the proposed candidates to the Vanier-Banting Secretariat (the Secretariat) by November 1, 2023.
